Background information
This design satisfies the most demanding requirements for connected portable audio equipment, such as low power consumption, very small form factor, and various interconnectivity options. Its integrated IDE interface ensures high-performance data transfers to and from the storage device. Also, it can interface to video encoders to allow rending of images on a TV set.
Specially optimized for low-power audio playback, the PNX0106 is perfect for portable handheld devices. Its architecture and processing performance make it an ideal solution for audio devices that can easily be extended with other types of multimedia functionality, such as image viewing and simple video playback.
The PNX0106 is based on the powerful AM926EJ-S CPU core, a full 32-bit RISC processor implemented with 16 kBytes instructions cache and 16 kBytes data cache. A dedicated 24-bit DSP core handles the audio streaming and audio post-processing, further reducing power consumption and enabling other optional multimedia features and advanced user interface functionality on the ARM processor. The built-in IDE interface offers not only PIO mode but also UDMA support, allowing for fast and effective transfer of data to and from the storage device.
The PNX0106 has a fully integrated Hi-Speed USB OTG peripherals enabling rapid data download from a PC to the portable device. This also lets the PNX0106 operate in host mode to transfer data to any other USB-enabled device. Various integrated peripherals allow of easy incorporation of standard wireless and wired interconnectivity standards such as IEEE 802.11b/g and Bluetooth.
Complementary software stacks offer state-of-the-art features. These stacks include the Philips power-optimized audio stack, as well as software offering based on the Linux operating system available from MontaVista. |
