Background information
Through a collaboration with Global Locate, a leading provider of GPS and assisted GPS (A-GPS) technologies, NXP now offers this 3G reference design, delivering position-fix times that are as much as one second faster than industry standards.
Mobile phones that use this reference design will give end-users better performance when using navigation and tracking services, such as finding a nearby restaurant or getting driving directions.
The design, based on the NXP Nexperia cellular system solution 7210 for EDGE/UMTS, includes a Hammerhead2 A-GPS chip from Global Loate. Recently released, Hammerhead2 is the world’s smallest A-GPS receiver, combining LNA, RF tuner, PLL, and baseband functions in a 3.6 x 3.8 mm single die CMOS chip. Global Locate’s patented host-based architecture and unique signal processing techniques result in sensitivity to -160 dBm, and position fix times as high as one second above industry standards.
The reference design supports RRLP (Radio Resource Location Protocol), RRC (Radio Resource Control), and SUPL (Secure User Plane Location) standards for A-GPS, allowing headset manufacturers to comply with mobile operator and government location requirements in North America, Europe, and Asia without additional software development.
To help customers design the right products quickly, we offer an extensive support network of software engineers and cellular experts working in locations throughout the world, with a particularly strong presence in Asia. We combine this field support with regularly held training sessions, for hands-on learning.
